The Builder verifier rejects a shared database when a newer unrelated migration follows its required migration. Look up the required timestamp and keep checking its exact hash, tables, and enum definitions, so compatible later history is accepted.

The integration fixture runs against a dedicated local PostgreSQL database. Its URL guard rejects connection-option query parameters, and it checks the connected database name before resetting schemas. CI provisions that disposable database separately from the existing chat runtime job.

AI review notes:
The installed postgres driver allows URL query parameters to populate startup connection options, so checking only the URL pathname did not establish the effective database target. The new guard has regression coverage for remote hosts, wrong database names, wrong protocols, and query overrides.
All nine verifier integration scenarios passed against a newly initialized local PostgreSQL 17.11 cluster, including compatible later history and missing or invalid migration/schema cases. No production database was accessed during this update.
Full pnpm test and normal commit hooks passed on aa279d5 with the local integration database enabled. The actual fixture also rejects a database-name query override before connecting. The disposable cluster was stopped afterward. Updated-head CI and the required team review remain pending.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Migration verification now checks the required migration directly, improving detection of missing, reordered, or mismatched migration history.
    • Validation now reports schema issues involving required tables and enum definitions more reliably.
  • Tests

    • Added integration coverage for migration history, schema, table, and enum validation scenarios.
    • Added safeguards ensuring destructive test fixtures use only the dedicated local PostgreSQL test database.
    • Continuous integration now runs these checks against PostgreSQL 17.

📝 Walkthrough

The migration-history query now selects the required Builder migration and matching applied version. Database-backed integration tests cover migration history, tables, and enums. The PR workflow starts PostgreSQL 17 and validates its connection URL.

Changes: Builder schema verification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Migration matching and schema verification
scripts/verify-builder-schema.ts, tests/builder-schema-verifier.test.ts
The verifier requires the 0000_builder_durability migration, filters applied history by its version, and orders matching rows by descending id. Integration tests cover accepted and rejected migration, table, and enum states.
Test database provisioning and URL guards
.github/workflows/pr.yml, tests/helpers/builder-test-database.ts, tests/builder-test-database.test.ts
The PR workflow configures a PostgreSQL 17 test database and its connection URL. The URL helper accepts only the dedicated local PostgreSQL database, and tests reject unsupported URL forms.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: abeuty

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 5e1f7

The changed workflow is configured to run the Builder schema checks against a dedicated test database. No actionable merge-blocking risk is established; updated-head CI remains to complete.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 60638

The deployment verifier retains its required migration hash, table, and enum checks. A new test-database safety check can nevertheless accept a connection string that targets another local database. Exploitation requires control of the test configuration and sufficient database privileges; the supplied CI configuration does not exercise this bypass.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The destructive test fixture checks the database name in the URL pathname but passes the complete URL unchanged to postgres.js. A URL ending in /builder_schema_verifier_tests?database=another_database passes that guard while selecting another local database. If the supplied role can connect and drop its schemas, reset can destroy non-test objects. This is a newly introduced destination-control gap, bounded by local-server reachability, configuration control, and database privileges; the fixed CI URL does not trigger it.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The destination-control gap can affect schemas in another database on the configured local PostgreSQL server, limited by the supplied role's connection and schema-drop authority. The inspected CI configuration points to its test service and does not establish a path to production databases.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller controlling BUILDER_SCHEMA_TEST_DATABASE_URL can retain the permitted pathname while adding a database query override. postgres.js copies that override into the startup parameters after the pathname-derived database value; reset then issues DROP SCHEMA CASCADE against the effective destination. This requires configuration control and sufficient database authority, not merely access to the application.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The suite skips without its dedicated environment variable and rejects ordinary remote-host or differently named database URLs. The verifier subprocess uses execFile with fixed arguments rather than shell interpolation, and CI supplies a fixed URL without query overrides. These controls substantially limit exposure but do not enforce the effective database identity.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The hosted job's service ownership and single unit-test invocation provide failure containment for normal CI execution. A later reset rebuilds a partial fixture, but independently launched local suites lack cross-process coordination. Service teardown after interruption was not observed, and connection cleanup does not cover setup failures before the scenario try block.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Reject connection-string destination overrides and verify current_database() on the actual connection before destructive DDL. A fixture-specific role restricted to the disposable database would additionally constrain the consequences of configuration mistakes.

Good catch, the verifier and fixture now select the Builder migration explicitly.

AI review notes:
Both select 0000_builder_durability from the repository journal and report a missing entry before reading its SQL. Later unrelated migrations no longer change the required Builder hash or timestamp.
All nine scenarios passed against disposable local PostgreSQL. The corrected fixture fails against the previous verifier, and the full pnpm test suite passed. No production database was accessed.
