✨ ClusterObjectSet adopts referenced Secrets for garbage collection - #3061
Makes a ClusterObjectSet (COS) adopt the Secrets its phases reference by adding a non-controller ownerReference to each, so Kubernetes garbage-collects those Secrets when the COS is deleted. This gives a COS/COD-backed installation a self-contained secret lifecycle that follows the referencing revision(s), including when a COD/COS is used standalone (outside a ClusterExtension).
Why
Referenced content Secrets need a well-defined owner so they don't leak across revision churn, COD deletion, or COS pruning. Anchoring ownership on the COS (short/medium-lived, per-revision) — rather than on a long-lived owner that never drops its reference — means standard k8s GC reclaims each Secret once no live COS references it.
Design principle: own, not manage
The object-controller adds a secret ownerRef purely as a GC anchor:
non-controller (Controller=false) — so a Secret can have multiple owners (several COSes referencing shared content, plus any existing owner), and only GC-cascade semantics are used;
additive-only, deduped by owner UID — it never adds a second ref for a UID already present and never modifies/removes an existing ref, so it coexists with the operator-controller applier's current ownerRef patching;
best-effort — claims on Secret existence (runs before the content-validity gates, so a mutable/malformed referenced Secret is still owned), skips not-yet-readable Secrets and retries on later reconciles, and never preempts the existing PreconditionsNotMet reporting.
The COS does not otherwise manage these Secrets (no watch, no content mutation, no validation-driven lifecycle); the COD gains no secret logic.
Scope
In scope: the object-controller (COD/COS) side only.
Deferred / future work: (1) restricting referenceable Secrets to type: olm.operatorframework.io/object-data — today any referenced type is adopted; (2) the operator-controller / ClusterExtension side (secret creation, a transient bridging ownerRef, and converting the applier's existing Controller=true patching).
Testing
Unit: the claim adds a non-controller ownerRef to each referenced Secret regardless of type; idempotent; UID-dedup no-op against an existing Controller=true ref; skips missing Secrets; dedups multi-referenced Secrets; best-effort on transient read errors (preserves the pre-existing "mutable Secret takes precedence over a read error" invariant).
envtest: the claim patch is accepted on an immutable Secret and is idempotent across a real Get/Patch roundtrip (envtest has no GC, so cascade is covered by e2e).
e2e (experimental, @BoxcutterRuntime): three standalone scenarios — deleting a COS GCs its referenced Secret; deleting a COD GCs its revisions' Secrets; a referenced non-object-data (Opaque) Secret is also adopted and GC'd. These compile and all steps resolve; they still need a run against an experimental cluster (make test-experimental-e2e).
Notes
Draft: the branch is currently based on an older main and should be rebased onto the latest main before review.
The existing operator-controller applier is intentionally untouched (its Controller=true patching is handled in the deferred CE-side work).
ClusterObjectSets now record ownership of referenced Secrets, including immutable Opaque Secrets, without changing an existing controller owner.
Once ownership is recorded, referenced Secrets can be cleaned up when the owning set is deleted. Object-data Secrets are also cleaned up when a standalone set or deployment is deleted.
Repeated references do not create duplicate ownership records, and references in different namespaces are handled separately.

Walkthrough
ClusterObjectSet reconciliation adds non-controller owner references to readable referenced Secrets before immutability checks. Tests cover claim behavior and cleanup of referenced Secrets after deleting a set or deployment.
Reconciliation deduplicates references by name and namespace, adds a non-controller owner reference to readable Secrets, and returns an error if a patch fails. Secret RBAC adds the update verb.
Unit tests and envtest cover claim creation, idempotency, existing controller references, Opaque and missing Secrets, duplicate references, and namespace handling.
Verify end-to-end ownership and cleanup test/e2e/steps/steps.go, test/e2e/steps/group_steps.go, test/e2e/features/cos_secret_ownership.feature
End-to-end steps collect namespace-aware Secret references and check owner references. Scenarios verify cleanup after deleting a set or deployment.
Secret claiming can fail with Forbidden under a least-privilege role, blocking reconciliation of sets that reference Secrets. A concurrent claim can briefly drop another owner reference, so a Secret may be garbage-collected too early. Fix the RBAC verb and add an optimistic lock to the patch before merging.

Explanation
The title "✨ ClusterObjectSet adopts referenced Secrets for garbage collection" names the main change: the ClusterObjectSet now adds owner references to the Secrets its phases reference so garbage collection can reclaim them. The ✨ prefix matches the repository's minor/compatible change convention. The title is concise and specific, and it matches the raw summary and objectives.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has the icon-prefixed title, a Description section that explains what the change does and why, and a Reviewer Checklist section. The author states testing coverage (unit, envtest, e2e) and scope, and records deferred work and a rebase note. The checklist items are not ticked, and the description does not link a related GitHub issue, but it does reference PR #3061 in the objectives. These gaps are minor and non-critical.

Make a ClusterObjectSet (COS) adopt the Secrets its phases reference by adding a
non-controller ownerReference to each, so Kubernetes garbage-collects those
Secrets when the COS is deleted. This gives COS/COD-backed content a
self-contained secret lifecycle that follows the referencing revision(s),
including when a COD/COS is used standalone (outside a ClusterExtension).
The claim is a best-effort GC anchor ("own, not manage"): a non-controller,
additive, UID-deduped ownerReference that coexists with any pre-existing owner
reference; it claims on Secret existence (before the content-validity gates, so a
mutable/malformed referenced Secret is still owned), skips not-yet-readable
Secrets and retries on later reconciles, and never preempts the existing
PreconditionsNotMet reporting. Referenced-Secret collection is shared with the
immutability check via a single helper.
Scope is the object-controller (COD/COS) side only. Restricting referenceable
Secrets to the object-data type, and the operator-controller/ClusterExtension
side (secret creation, a transient bridging ownerReference, and converting the
applier's existing Controller=true patching) are deferred.
Covered by unit tests (claim semantics, UID-dedup, best-effort reads), an envtest
(immutable-Secret patch accepted, idempotent, applier coexistence), and
experimental e2e scenarios for standalone COD/COS secret GC.
